Hillsborough Memorial Match
ITV4 and ITV.com broadcast live coverage of the the Hillsborough Memorial Match live from
Anfield on Thursday 14 May 2009.
The match, which had been organised by Reds legend Kenny Dalglish, saw a team of Liverpool
legends take on a celebrity side to raise funds for the Marina Dalglish appeal which plans to
help fund a new radiotherapy unit at the University Hospital in Aintree, and build a memorial
to the 96 fans who died at Hillsborough at Fazakerley Hospital.
Coverage began at 7pm with the game kicking off 7.45pm
More than 25,000 fans flocked to Anfield for the Hillsborough memorial match between a
Liverpool Legends side and an All-Star XI to give a substantial helping hand to charity.
Other than Bradley Walsh who played in defence, the All-Star squad included Alan Shearer,
Teddy Sheringham, Mike Newell, Alan Irvine, Nigel Clough, Des Walker, Dave Watson, Alan Stubbs,
Trevor Steven and Graham Stuart, along with celebrities Joe Calzaghe, Nicky Byrne, Craig David
and Gethin Jones.
The real draw for the game was the Anfield legends, which included Kenny Dalglish, Robbie Fowler,
John Aldridge, Ian Rush, Peter Beardsley, Ronnie Whelan, Gary Gillespie, Jan Molby, Gary Ablett,
Steve Staunton, Jamie Redknapp, Steve McManaman, Gary McAllister and Don Hutchison.
Minding the net for the legends was Paul Harrison, the Liverpool Academy graduate who lost his
father and uncle at Hillsborough.
LFC Legends 3-1 All Stars
Kenny Dalglish admitted his wife Marina probably had a good laugh at his expense when he was
deliberately let through to score the final goal of last night's Hillsborough memorial match
at Anfield.
With the Liverpool Legends leading 2-1, Dalglish who had earlier been substituted, returned to
the Anfield turf late on and with just two minutes remaining, the All Stars' former Everton
defender Alan Stubbs sportingly 'left' a pass into the area for the 58-year-old to latch on to
although he still had to get past a light-hearted challenge from goalkeeper Bobby Mimms before
slotting the ball into the Kop goal.
