Law & Order UK |
ITV is lining up a British version of the hit crime drama Law & Order in a rare example of an American-scripted programme being remade for a UK audience. Britain has long had success in exporting shows to be remade for US audiences, from Till Death Us Do Part to The Office, whereas UK broadcasters usually take American versions of programmes. ITV is understood to be in "advanced talks" with the American network NBC about the new show, which is expected to be called Law & Order: London. The British production company Kudos, which makes the BBC1 dramas Life On Mars and Spooks, will co-produce the new series - which will be based on the American version's scripts - with NBC Universal. The UK show, which is expected to be given an initial 13-episode run - long by British standards - would be the first English-language version outside the US. NBC has had success with Russian and French versions of the series spin-offs Special Victims Unit and Criminal Intent. The British show would be the first foreign spin-off of the main franchise. Law & Order is the longest running crime series on American television, entering its 18th season this week. It is the second-longest running US television series, outdistanced only by cowboy classic Gunsmoke. Law & Order was created in 1990 by American drama producer Dick Wolf, a former classmate of George Bush, and has starred Fred Thompson, who is campaigning for the Republican presidential nomination. The show proved a success in Britain when it aired on Channel Five and several versions of the franchise air on other UK channels. ITV hopes to begin production in April to broadcast the show next year. It would fit with ITV1's new schedule, announced yesterday, focusing on hour-long dramas to air in the 9pm slot three nights a week before the resurrected News at Ten. Bradley Walsh and Jamie Bamber star as detectives Ronnie Brooks and Matt Devlin with Atonement actress Harriet Walter as their boss, DI Natalie Chandler. Alongside Agyeman in the crown prosecution service (CPS) side of matters are Ben Daniels as senior prosecutor James Steel and veteran Scottish actor Bill Paterson as CPS director George Castle. Kudos, which also makes the con-artist drama Hustle, was recently bought by Shine, the production company owned by Rupert Murdoch's daughter Elisabeth. Shine is also currently in the process of buying American production company Reveille, which was set up by the recently appointed NBC Entertainment co-chairman Ben Silverman. The British deal forms part of NBC's aim to double its international revenues over three years. It is thought the British version would also make it back to the US on one of NBC's cable channels, such as USA or Bravo. |
Bradley opens the refurbished Milton Keynes Hospital ward |
Ward Opening on 4.30pm, 11th December Bradley Walsh, who is set to star in Aladdin at the Milton Keynes Theatre from 7 December to 20 January, is set to officially open the refurbished, newly decorated and upgraded Ward 8 of Milton Keynes Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, which has been redesigned to help fight infections. Over the past year several building and refurbishment projects have been undertaken at the hospital as part of a major redevelopment. The re-opening of Ward 8, which specialises in the care and treatment of patients with respiratory conditions, marks the beginning of a ward upgrade project and represents a great improvement to patient care. In implementing the £450,000 upgrade of Ward 8, the Trust made a conscious decision to reduce number of beds from 28 to 25 in order to provide additional toilet and shower facilities for patients. The beds are situated in enclosed bays or side rooms to provide patients with greater privacy and dignity, another key element of the design concept. Five new side rooms, four with en-suite facilities, support the care of vulnerable patients and can be used as isolation bays to prevent the spread of infections. Bathroom and toilet facilities have been upgraded, and there are now 10 shower rooms on the ward. Jill Rodney, Chief Executive of Milton Keynes Hospital, said: "We've transformed the ward to allow us to provide our patients with the highest standard of care in top quality facilities. The opening of the new ward highlights our commitment and determination to develop modern health facilities for the people of Milton Keynes." "The new facility is part of a rolling programme to refurbish areas of the hospital and make major improvements to enhance patient care." Bob Heavisides, Director of Facilities, said: "The new-look, well-equipped ward provides a fresh, modern environment for patients. The increase in side rooms and shower facilities enables us to provide an even higher level of patient care." Lorraine Baker, Matron at Milton Keynes Hospital, added: "This is a very exciting time for respiratory medicine, with the recent appointment of a new Consultant and Advanced Nurse Practitioner. The Ward Manager Gerry Eggleton and her team of nurses are delighted with the new environment, which helps them deliver patient-centred care." Bradley Walsh became a household name playing Danny Baldwin in Coronation Street. He is set to feature in a Dickens costume drama alongside Sir Derek Jacobi, which will be screened on ITV this Christmas. |
The Old Curiosity Shop |
This superb dramatisation of Dickens' classic novel has been well received by the critics. Featuring a terrific cast - including Derek Jacobi, Toby Jones, Sophie Vavasseur, Zoe Wanamaker, Bradley Walsh and Gina McKee - it's got quality written all over it. Provided you're not expecting a warm and snug Christmas tale and are prepared for a dark story with an unpleasant ending, then it's a must-see for Boxing Day night. |
